From Blogs to Dogs, this Internship’s Got it All!

by: Kyla Osburn

Verdin was my first college internship and my first ever job in marketing. Initially, I expected everything to be easy, having spent the better part of three years taking journalism and public relations classes, but start to finish this internship was a learning experience.

From brainstorm sessions to blog writing to client research, I was able to try a little bit of everything. Some tasks were routine, some were fun and challenging, but all helped me develop new skills that I will be able to use in the future.
Although I had the opportunity to work on a bunch of different projects, my favorites and the most challenging were those involving social media. Unfortunately for Verdin, they ended up with a 20-year-old intern with the Facebook and Instagram skills of a senior citizen. I’m proud to say my skills have advanced to Facebook Mom level after two months of writing captions and posting for a variety of clients.
This quarter has been huge for self-reflection. In applying my studies in an actual workplace, it has been easier to identify my strengths and weaknesses, helping me to determine what I should be focusing on for the remainder of my time in college.
I couldn’t have asked for a better internship. Between having dogs wandering the office on Fridays, lots of free snacks (shout out to the homemade cookies) and patient, supportive coworkers I really lucked out!
